Crafting, Crafting, Crafting (Q&A, Discussion, Etc.)

Here's information recently assembled about TERA's crafting system. It was originally posted here: http://www.terafans.com/topic/3576-crafting-crafting-crafting/. Updates will be provided at that original link only.

Updates:

July 16, 2010 (Added new questions)
July 14, 2010 (Added OnlineWelten.com interview Q&As)

After writing in another thread 15 questions we don't know the answers to regarding just crafting, I realized we don't really have any active thread discussing crafting.

Hopefully at some point in the not-too-distant-future, Amira may get another interview with the TERA staff and we can get some of these answered. (Maybe a crafting exclusive since they've done Berserker/Archer exclusives already?)

What are your questions? I'd love to hear from some of the hardcore crafting enthusiasts about what you loved, didn't love in other games and what you'd hope to see in TERA.

Those of us who crafted in the FGTs can't really provide much information since it's covered under NDA and there's been virtually no information released by En Masse about it. There has been a lot of mention of it being important and of being "in development" though.

Onlinewelten: Looking at the endgame: What do you offer high level players in TERA to keep them busy?

Jason Mical: TERA’s endgame will involve the full spectrum of things you expect from an MMO, including [...]working the economy by crafting, enchanting, and playing the market.

Onlinewelten: Will the strongest crafted weapons and armors be as good as any other kind of items we can loot in-game? Or are they even better?

Jason Mical: The current plan is to make the highest-end items exclusive to raid boss drops, but crafted items can come very close to these high-end items. We’ll talk more about the crafting and enchanting systems soon, and get more in-depth about what exactly that means.

Onlinewelten: How can we get resources for crafting? Do we gather them only or can we get some materials from mobs?

Jason Mical: You’ll get resources through a variety of ways: gathering, drops, trading, and so on.

Q. Concerning equipment: will I be able to get the same high-end items from mobs/raid bosses and from crafting?

A. The current plan is to make the highest-end items exclusive to raid boss drops, but crafted items can come very close to these high-end items. We’ll talk more about the crafting and enchanting systems soon, and get more in-depth about what exactly that means.

tG: What are you offering for customization at endgame?

B: Players are developing their own factions, defining alliances themselves. In terms of actual customization, we're doing a lot of things. Our gear, especially the crafting system you can take regular gear and kind of craft up the gear to be epic gear - the kind you'd get off dungeon monsters. It simplifies crafting a lot as well as the typical dungeon raiding as well.

1:28:31 - Profession systems interdependent upon other player's crafting?

The profession systems didn't receive the best feedback in the FGT. It was too hardcore. We want it to have more appeal. We don't want it to be a pain in the *** by forcing players to rely on everyone else just to get their craft done. It was surprising it didn't go very well.

1:29:55 - How important is crafting?

It's pretty important. Players will be crafting and it will be part of their arsenal just like questing. Could make up for missing a boss fight by crafting something great.

1:30:40 - Xp from crafting?

No.

1:30:55 - Is crafting as grueling as in AION?

No.

1:31:18 - Is crafting split up for harvesting and crafting?

Resources, dropped, bought goods make up the recipes.

Q. Crafting was very difficult. Gathering material is also difficult, it takes a lot of time and the crafted items were not worth their time and effort.

A. Crafting is an important part of TERA's equipment system.
We're planning on making Crafting more easily accessible to players, and make it so that the rewards will become better and better.

Additionally, we're going to make improvements such as random options being added to crafted items to making Crafting more interesting.

Q: Crafting in TERA: What will it be like?

A: We’re still finalizing the balance of the crafting system in TERA. We want it to appeal to all users, even those who haven’t made crafting a major part of their MMO experience before, but to reward the hardcore crafters as well. We’ve got some pretty fun ideas that we hope will appeal to both audiences!

HOW WILL CRAFTING WORK?

1. Professions are learned once you reach the first major city: Velika.
2. You train in a profession by talking with one of the crafting NPCs.
3. Profession trainers have materials and recipes you can purchase.
4. Once you have the materials needed for a recipe, you click a button to initiate the craft.
5. Low-level crafting appears to only use individual materials without first having to craft or combine them to craft a final product.
6. A progress bar expands to demonstrate the craft.
7. Currently, there is no crafting animation (e.g. seweing, hammering, etc.).
8. Pandora's Box allows you to gamble crafting materials in a chance to win (or lose) even more materials.
9. You can craft rare and epic items equal to that of raiding/dungeon loot.

WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT CRAFTING

I'll break these into sub-categories as needed, but here's the list of questions compiled thus far.

1. How many professions are in the game?
2. What will each profession do and what items does each profession supply?
3. What is the skill cap for a profession and how do you earn it (e.g. Aion had Work Orders; WOW had you craft usable gear that was often just disenchanted)?
4. Can you train in multiple professions?
5. Can you train all the professions to max (e.g. Aion allowed you to train all 6 crafts to 399, but only two to the cap of 449)?
6. Are professions interdependent (e.g. need a potion from Alchemy to use in Armorsmithing to enhance the armor strength)?
7. How far along will your crafting need to be in order to craft something equal to an "epic instance drop"?
8. How long does it take to craft a single item?
9. Can you craft brand new items or can you only upgrade existing loot?
10. Will there be mini-games as a part of crafting?
11. Will crafting be proc-based (like Aion) where you can fully fail and lose all your materials or will it just craft something that's of lower quality?
12. If proc-based, how do you improve your chances of gaining an "upgrade"?
13. What is the mechanic for "upgrading" your loot drops to be more epic? (Other loot drops? Crafted items "socketed" into your gear?"
14. Will a profession allow you to increase the number of Enhancement Crystals you can socket into your chest and weapon?
15. Is there a profession that can craft Enhancement Crystals? (If so, this one's going to be POPULAR!)?
16. Will crafting provide continuous flow of upgrades, making it reliable on while leveling up, so your character and equipment process is not purely quest-reward and drop based? And have you proper plans to actually achieve this? (from Hati)
17. Is crafting only possible in a major town/capital (e.g. next to the loom, cauldron, stove, blacksmith fires, etc.) or can you craft anywhere?
18. For crafted consumables (e.g. potions), how many can you put in a stack? In Aion, you could have a single stack of thousands for harvested materials (e.g. ores, plants) and stacks of hundreds for HP/MP potions.
19. Could obtaining crafting materials be more difficult instead of using procs? (from ImperialPanda)
20. Will there be profession specific buffs that let you do this kind of haggling with profession specific NPCs, i.e. I'm an alchemist and can haggle with potion vendors, or I'm a blacksmith and can repair items for cheaper? (from saeda)
21. Will you be able to gain XP while crafting like in Aion? (from foxmaiden)
22. Will you need to craft separate, combinable materials just to craft one actual piece of gear (e.g. craft rods, chains, and plates separately, then use them all in a recipe to craft a chain chest piece)? (from foxmaiden)
23. Will crafting require a lot of gold in order to actually craft something useful? (from foxmaiden)
24. What is being done to be sure crafting is tested across all levels to know whether or not it's balanced and useful? (from UltimateCarl)
25. Given professions are often used as ways for players to make money in game, what's being done to sure the professions themselves offer some balance so taking a "less popular" craft doesn't mean you're unable to make money? (from UltimateCarl)
26. In WoW, only a couple professions are ideal for raiding, and one is far superior even compared to those (Jewel crafting). Will TERA's crafting mimic WoW's or will all professions be usable endgame? (from saeda)
27. The WoW idea that everyone is a crafter and you are primarily being a crafter for the Bind on Pickup things you can craft for yourself is a horrible idea. Will TERA professions have BoP items that would force you to have to take a specific profession depending on the class you rolled so you could have "the" right gear? (from Bringer)
28. Will crafted items appearance reflect the reagents or components used? In other words will a sword created by using fish scales have any fish scale thingie on it? (from Hati)
29. Can you disassemble crafted items and get some of your materials back? This would put a greater emphasis on making things and a lesser emphasis on gathering. (from rocdog)
30. Can level 1 characters have a max level profession? A requirement for being max level in a profession should be your character is level 60. (from Tirien)
31. How much of crafting is based solely on RNG? (various feedback from several people)
32. How do you obtain rare recipes? (from Choko)
33. Can we take the already epic gear that we can get from dungeon monsters and craft those to make THOSE pieces of gear even better? (from Kelth)
34. Will the crafting system be independent of the raiding system? For example, rather than having high end schematics drop from raid encounters, why not have unique high end mats drop that the raider can then take to a high level crafter and have them forged into something awesome? (from Leonyx)
35. Will any/each profession have specific crafting quests, preferably soloable (but tough)? (from Leonyx)
36. Are all crafting materials tradeable? (from Leonyx)
37. Will crafting allow you to "craft how your gear looks"? This way I wouldn't care where the gear dropped or what I had on, I would always look cool! (from Merandus)
38. What is Enchanting and how will it work? Is it an actual crafting profession?
